Although the Sea Peoples clearly possessed oared galleries the fact that the scene of the sea fight at Medinet Habu does not show oars (Medinet Habu, Volume 1: Earlier Historical Records of Ramses III [Chicago, 1930] Plates 37-41) has been taken to mean that the Egyptian fleet caught the enemy off guard, anchored off shore: L. Casson, The Ancient Mariners (New York, 1959) 41-42. Similarly the presence of oxcarts with women and children has been construed as indicating that the Sea Peoples were caught on the march: Medinet Habu 1 (Plate 32). Needless to say this is pressing the Ramesside artists (whose accuracy in this particular mortuary temple is sometimes suspect) much too far ...
